música en el ramaje de las venas;

In this Thoughts, Pascal wrote. "All men´s miseries derive from not being able to sit in a quiet room alone. " What compels us- he would ask- to embark on the quest of laying siege to a city? Why would we take a long journey or a voyage of exploration, if life itself is a tour and the expanse of the place we occupy is enough to discover all that is humanly possible to discover?

Sandra Pani is an artist who shares these ideas and lets them flourish in her paintings. Keeping quiet, in contemplation, anda feeling as one with the place she occupies is a way of taking up a world that harmoniosly relates to her own nature. That is why, at least until quite recently, she hadn´t felt the need to explore a universe beyond the boundaries of her own body.

Hers was a Homeric trip around her body, searching for her origins, the lode of her feelings and the source of her awareness. Thus, time and again Sandra was endlessly drawing herself, using a pencil to trace the outline of her figure, and later on-with the help of a wide array of materials-she explored the bottomless world of inner surface that constitute us all, with the profund superficially of painting.

In this sense, her painting is far from the obvious narcissim evident in many painters and draftsmen who have obsessively been executing self-portraits. Sandra´s incisive explorations of warmth of the skin and the glittering makeup are not her thing. She is attracted to the possibility of penetrating the body, using the brush as if it were a scalpel, getting inside the body in order to search for other things.

Is it possible that Sandra Pani´s painting aim to recall something that the body knows, but that it relentlessly hides and keeps silent about? The titles of her most recent exhibitions-"The Optical Scalpel" (1998) and "Body Memory" (2003)- would seem to suggest just that. It might also be that this pictorial search is after nothing that is found in time, only in space of painting itself? One cannot forget that, ever since artists such as Jackson Pollock (or his lesser-know wife, the excellent Lee Krasner) stopped seeing the canvas as some kind of window through which the world shows itself, and started transforming it into the field where the new world of artistic experience becomes manifiest, what the painting presents and what it represents became one and the same thing.

Sandra Pani´s painted bodies, showing all their anatomical structures, are no different from her painting´s bodies, in which strokes, spots, erasures and touches of color write her story, one in which we can glimpse the tutelary figure of her grandfather, architect Mario Pani, frankly telling Sandra: "That´s curious, looking at you one would never guess that you paint what you do paint..."

Having started this essay by stating that Sandra Pani´s art hasn´t needed to take long trips to find the object of her predilection-her own body, serving as a magnet to find the bearings of her pictorial practice-I would like to add that the same happens regarding her work´s shape. It has been a long time since her aesthic family was formed, and the same has happened to it that usually happens with time to all families: they grow and diminish, narrow and widen, but are always essentially the same.

Let me give one example related to her sparing use of color, using restricted palettes that always relate to the whiteness of bones. This has been mentioned in texts written about her that invoke the likes of Robert Ryman and Armando Reverón, "masters in the strenuous art of whites and luminosity", as Germaine Gómez Haro writes in her Sandra Pani´s Furtive Steps. This could also be said of Mark Tobey and his "White Scriptures" or the canvasses and white bass-relief works by british painter Ben Nicholson.

But if any painter comes to mind when reflecting about Sandra Pani´s white paintings it is Morandi. It is not only the austerity of white hues and the restricted range of forms that make us think about the Italian painter, but also the methodical destrcution of all perspective to build, from this tabula rasa, a new pictorial space that is undoubtedly a shared passion. And there´s no better place to quote Giulio Carlo Argan, who, in the chapter devoted to Morandi in his book Modern Art: From Illuminism to Contemporary Movements (not available in English), states the following:

Morandi´s search springs from a theoretical space whose very feasibily starts in the cubist and empty perspective of Chirico´s. But beware, since Morandi´s paintings do not evade Metaphysics; they are an evasion regarding Metaphysics...

I do not Know if Sandra Pani evades Metaphysics evades towards Metaphysics. But it is evident that there´s something sticking out from or hiding behind her whitish veils. What is it? something else.

What might that something else be? It is something far from evident, a trait that huma beings do not show willingly on the public arena. Something that we keep absent from the relationships we enter into in everyday life-something more akin to the impressive slaughtered ox painted by Rembrandt than to his penetrating self-portraits.. It is something to do with the body, but it is not the body; something to do with physiology, but not physiology. It is more and less than physichology. It is as if Sandra were trying to show us an inner portrait, both of herself and of her works, and as much of the human beings as of that something else.

just to what extent may a portrait be the reflection of something else, of other reality is perfectly described in a 2oth century story. Russian composer, Igor Stravinsky, recalls in his Chronicles that in 1917 he met Picasso for the first time in Rome. The painter made a beautiful portrait of the composer at the Hotel de la Russie and presented it to him. Never did Stravinsky imagine the problems that Picasso´s drawing would cause him on crossing the Italo-Swiss border.

When the miitary authorities examined my luggage they found the drawing and wouldn´t let it throug. the asked me what it represented, and when I told them it was my own portrait, executed by a great artist they refuse to belive me: "It´s not a portrait; it´s a map", one of them said. "Well, certainly, it´s the map of my face, but nothing else", I replied, but wasn´t able to convince them.

It is thus clear that every portrait is also something else, the map of some other thing, of another reality.

The other artist taht comes to mind when viewing Sandra Pani´s paintings is Alberto Giacometti, in whose works one finds the same austerity, the same independence, the same pasion for reaching the depths of from, the world´s framework, its very skeleton. There is a fondness for seeing beyond the world towards what the world makes us feel, and a will to listening to the inner world rather than to the exterior world. It may not be new to find refuge in the inner life, but is certainly something else to find flowers, nests, trees and even whole forests in that recess.

Bodies and trees share, after all, not only the sustenance of earth, but also a similar way of occupiying space-even if some can change place and some can´t. They also share an old ambition: to honor a verticality whose origins are to be found above, rather than below-whose roots are in the sky. After all, Plato himself used to think that man is an inverse tree, and one may paraphrase Octavio Paz by imagining man as a tree bearing images that are flowers that are fruits that are torsos that are paintings.

If on a first viewing Sandra Pani´s paintings could remind us of disturbing x-ray images, once we continue looking at them slowly and steadfastly, they reveal their true intent: to try to trace the outlines of a life, to capture the silhoutte of a misery, to create someone´s psycography (rather than their radiography), for what really matters here is to show what cannot be grasped at first sight.

As Santiago Espinosa de los Monteros says in his essay Sandra Pani: the Fourth Time, "It maters to extract from what is viewed those parts that have been noticed-that´s what is relevant there, since the insides are not often revealed in a simple or immediate way until they have been expressed by a hand that provides them with a new body." Strange entrails, indeed, or at least strangely superficial, since, after all we are talking of painted canvasses, artful paintings, superficial like any painting, and conventional as all art is.

Although the constructive process of Sandra Pani´s paintings is planned using drawings, her work has been gaining more and more freedom until reaching the point of self-expression. In her more recent canvasses drawing and painting (or form and content, to return once again to those eternal poles that mark an alternate movement in visual arts) are one and the same.

Form.. content.. yes, but what are the really? Pablo Picasso, always an intelligent observer, use to say -not without humor-:" the essence of an strawberry is in its seeds, but its seeds are in its surface!"

It is precisely in the surface of Sandra Pani´s paintings that the entrails of the represented body are surprisingly turned into trees and flowers, thanks to the transforming power of the poetic logic. As she would herself say in Note preceding the reproduction of her then recent drawings. exhibited in 1999 at the Museo de Arte Contemporaneo de Yucatán: "To create the body and the tree essentially with the same sibstance, and ask myself again what are they made of: transparent, filmsy, ethereal, open, warm, tangible matter."

Bodies, trees, flowers, nests, hearts: being in continuous transformation. A veritable transfiguration where A=B=C and so on. As Octavio Paz wrote in his "Letter of Testimony" that closes A Tree Within:

Blood:
Music on the foliage of veins;
Touch:
Light in the night of the bodies

Sandra Pani´s paintings are blood that is music that is wind dreaming in the branches of the tree that is also our body.

For all this about going beyond and seeing further; about finding poetry in the very act of painting.

It is, after all, about smelling the fragance of that flower that lives within the heart.
